Breaking Ground in Belhaven
Metropolitan Begins Work on New Multi-Family Housing
Belhaven, NC – Metropolitan Housing & CDC broke ground for a new multi-family housing development in Belhaven, North Carolina, on Thursday, November 6. The property, Rio Del Mar, will be located on Old County Road. Once construction is complete, twenty-four units of affordable housing will be made available for low- to moderate-income families.
“This is an opportunity for NCHFA and the USDA/RD to help families who were impacted by Hurricane Floyd. Everyone deserves a decent, safe, affordable home—Rio Del Mar will make that possible for those in the Belhaven area,” said Reverend David Moore, President and CEO of Metropolitan.
Rio Del Mar possible through flood programs administered by North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) and the United States Department of Agriculture/ Rural Development (USDA/RD). Funding from these programs has come in the form of tax credits. Southland Partners, LLC, of Charlotte, will manage the property.
At the ceremony, Metropolitan’s partner organizations were represented. State Representative Arthur Williams, Ginger Taylor from USDA/RD, Russell Griffin from NCHFA, Belhaven Town Councilmen George R. Ebron and Al Baker, and Father Judson Mayfield of St. Dorcas Ministries expressed their support for the project. Metropolitan staff and board members Reverend David Moore, Reverend Melinda Moore, Marian Jones, and Bianca Gentile were excited at the prospects of benefiting so many families in the area.
Metropolitan Housing & CDC, a faith-based, non-profit organization, has served the low-income community for more than 12 years. Metropolitan has constructed or rehabilitated more than 500 units of safe, decent, affordable housing in North Carolina and South Carolina. Plans are underway for more projects in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Florida. More information is available at www.MetropolitanCommunity.org .
