Located
in Washington, North Carolina, Metropolitan Community Credit union serves
people who live, work, or worship in Beaufort, Hyde, and Pamlico Counties.
The credit union works to help members of the community help themselves by
providing financial services to its members.
Credit unions in the United States began with the 1930 Federal Credit Union Act. This legislation allowed for the formation of credit unions as an anti-poverty initiative. These institutions were designed to serve members of underserved or poor communities that were in need of a credit market to fulfill their financial needs. With the popularity and success of credit unions, others with a more explicit mission were developed and are known as Community Development Credit Unions (CDCUs).
CDCUs serve low-income, low-wealth communities and provide counseling, financial services, and affordable credit at reasonable interest rates to members. “Supporting the Community by Providing Opportunity” is the credit union's service motto. It depicts the credit union's dedication to serving members of low-wealth, low-income communities. By empowering them to strive for a better way of life, Metropolitan Community Credit Union, the area's first CDCU, encourages economic development, pride, and self-sufficiency.
Members of Metropolitan Community Credit Union can look to their credit union to promote thrift by affording them the opportunity to accumulate their savings, to create a source of credit at a fair and reasonable rate of interest, and to provide an opportunity to use and co-control their own money to improve their economies and social condition.
